Members Only Events

Friends of Childwall Woods and Fields (FCWF) now offer a series of regular events for its members, particularly during the spring, summer and autumn.
These members-only events are a way to say ‘Thank You’ to our members for all their support. They are not open to the general public.
As a member of  FCWF, you will be invited to the events by email.

WINTER NATURE WALK  Sunday  8th February at 10am
With the loss of leaves on the trees and amid the silence with the absence of bird song, it’s easy to think that nature is having a winter break, that nothing is happening, it’s all dead and there’s nothing to see.
But this is far from true – if you know how and where to look.
This members-only winter nature walk will look at what is going on now at CWF and particularly at our trees and birds. It is also possible that as we walk, we may find other beauties, such as
fungi and lichen, and who knows what else.
Many people rely on leaves alone to recognise trees, but it is also possible to easily recognise at least a dozen of our major tree families from their bark, buds, shape and flowers. Even without their leaves, trees are beautiful, and the architecture of the woods is revealed by their openness.
Birds also change in winter. Our spring songbirds may have gone and headed south for winter warmth, but others have arrived to take their place. Already this year, we have seen siskin, redwing and redpoll, migrants from the north, who have arrived in search of food and warmth(!) at CWF.
It’s not only the species which have changed, but bird behaviour changes too. Birds are not holding or defending territory or searching for a mate (though some are beginning to); they are more communal, moving in groups searching for food or shelter, especially the tits and finches. The calls are softer and birds are flightier, rarely still for long. But birds can be found, as we will show you.
We will be walking through the woods and around and across the top field, so dress for cold, wet and mud! Binoculars would be helpful and many people find the Merlin bird song identification app useful (we will be discussing the uses and problems with such apps on the walk).
The walk will be led by Andrew Scott, a Friends trustee, an RSPB member, and a verifier for the Ancient Tree Inventory.
Places are limited, early booking is strongly advised.”
Email events@fcwf.org.uk to secure a place. Please use Winter Nature Walk as your subject. The meeting place will be at the Countisbury Drive entrance.

March

Sunday 22nd March at 1pm. A Lichen Hunt.  Help us find and record all the different kinds of lichen that we have growing on our site.
Lichen is a unique organism resulting from a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga or a bacterium. Working together, you will see them growing as one organism on bark, rocks, and soil in our woods, manifesting in many different shapes, colours and textures.
With your help, we can photograph and record them as part of the rich biodiversity that lives in our beautiful nature reserve.
All you need is your phone camera.
You will be able to book a place on the team in February.

May

Sunday 10th May at 8am. An  Early Morning Bird Walk with Andy and David.
May is a wonderful, noisy time when the woods are full of birds busy building nests, laying eggs and feeding chicks. The perfect time for a guided walk.
You will be able to book your place on the walk in April.

There will be more members-only walks later in the year. Members will be notified by email
