Early morning Bird Walk Sunday 12 April

Fifteen keen birders joined trustees Andrew, David and Paul for an early morning bird walk at CWF on Sunday morning.

The weather was perfect: dry and sunny with little wind giving us perfect conditions to see and hear a wonderful variety of spring birds.

Right from the start the day was promising – waiting for the group to arrive Andrew and Paul saw a ring ouzel in the school playing field.  This relative of a blackbird is normally found in the mountains of Snowdonia or the Highlands – what on earth was it doing here?  But we weren’t complaining.

Wending our way across the lower, middle then top fields and into the main woods we saw 24 species of birds, many close up.  Bullfinches, chiffchaffs, tree creepers, nuthatches and great spotted woodpeckers, the birds were very cooperative and keen to be seen.  But the finale was the best – four young tawny owlets looking at us as we gazed at them.  The bird life at Childwall Woods and Fields can be wonderful.
