Veteran Tree 1 is a large sweet chestnut tree close to the boundary of Childwall Abbey Road.
Ancient Characteristics
Girth: 3m 66cm
Holes in the trunk near the top where branches have fallen
Deadwood in the crown of the tree.
Broken dead branches
Damaged bark at the base of the tree exposing rotting wood.
Epiphytic plants: Plants that are growing on the tree. A sign that the tree is having nutrients taken from it and is rotting.
A very tall tree. Showing signs of being past its best but not yet losing its height and not yet as hollow as an Ancient tree would be.
